wget for Snappy Core on the Raspberry Pi 2

If you want to get wget installed on ubuntu snappy core you will need to install some additional packages on the pi 2.
You need to install  libtasn1-3 , libgnutls26  and wget.
Copy them to your Rpi-2 with scp.
scp ~/Downloads/*.deb ubuntu@10.1.10.69:~/
Install it with
sudo dpkg -i ~/libtasn1-3_2.13-2+deb7u1_armhf.deb
sudo dpkg -i ~/libgnutls26_2.12.20-8+deb7u2_armhf.deb
sudo dpkg -i ~/wget_1.13.4-3+deb7u2_armhf.deb
Now you can use wget.

XB-508 Economy

Currently Testing the Battery usage on my extreme scooters XB-508.

This is the test route of the day,
Battery is pack is composed of 3ct 19.8V LiFePO4 4.5Ah Modules.

Total current capacity is 59.4V 4.5 Ah = 267.3 watt hours.
Charged up after the test route and measured that I used 2.665Ah to do the 3.5 Mile trip.

This is giving me an efficiency of 45.69 Wh/Mile.

Giving me a total capacity of 5.909 Miles per charge at 100% discharge and 4.728 miles at %80 discharge. %80 is where we usually like to keep our packs operating.

The good news is that I have 6 more batteries on order which will give me a total of 13.5Ah @ 60V which is 810 watt hours. That is a total range of 17.7 miles @ %100 and 14.2 miles @ 80% discharge.

X-Treme XB 508

I bought an XB508 for $200 with the batteries gone bad. I have some Toyota Prius battery modules I will be putting in soon. This scooter is very cheap. Construction quality is about a 3.5-4 out of 10.

I got a flat yesterday. My XB has 16x3.0 sized tires. This is of course an odd size so I did some searching around and some measuring. I figured that there had to be an alternative to buying more cheap tires from China. It seams that these tires are measured from the tire's outside diameter. Most tires in the US are measured from the wheel size that the tire fits. The ISO standard specifies that the tire should be measured from the inside of the tire bead and reported in mm. I will measure the wheel and report it here when I take the tire off tomorrow.

It seams that you can use a 3.0-12 inch tube and maybe even a 3.0-12 tire although it will be a tight fit. It can be hard to find one for the rear as it needs to have a bend in the valve stem. I ordered a 3.0-12 tube from my local scooter shop with a straight stem. I will probably need to move the front tube to the rear and put the tube I ordered in the front. We'll see how it goes.

Trike for the Mighty

I am building an electric trike for a guy I met from craigslist. I did a ton of research for the project so I thought I would share the information I found. Most of my research was on battery technology. I am excited because I really wanted to build an electric bike but I don’t have to pay for this project. I will even receive some compensation.

When it is done it should look something like this:
http://www.southwalesmassive.com/uploads/monthly_03_2009/post-20-1238150366.jpg

except that it is electric so maybe it will end up looking more like this:
http://www.ejewelryoriginals.com/Trike%20to%20GA.jpg

Actually it is not that big. I will look more like this one but with much more power and a Burning Man theme:
http://www.motoredbikes.com/phpBB2/userpix/2_azvinnie_1.jpg

And on to the research:

We need 4 or 5 parts.

  1. Batteries
  2. charger
  3. Motor controller
  4. (Cycle Analyst) Computer to protect the batteries and relay information about the batteries.
  5. DC-DC converter to run lights and any 12v accessories like a cigarette lighter/phone charger whatever.

Controllers 48v 40A:
Crystalyte: $250

Throttle: $15

Electric Bull: $225:

Comes with twist throttle.

BMC 48V 35A: $150 (Cheap but should be good)
http://www.hi-powercycles.com/product.sc?productId=44&categoryId=9
Throttle: $20

Cycle Analyst (to be used with Lithium Batteries):
(http://ebikes.ca/drainbrain.shtml) for Batt protection ($119.00)

Chargers:
Lead Acid or SLA 6A (Charge Time 40AH=8 hours, 29AH=5.8 Hours): $97.82
http://www.batteryspace.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=4964

LiFePO4, LiPO 5A (Charge Time 40AH=9.5 Hours, 20AH=4.8 Hours) $225:
http://www.falconev.com/batteries.html

NiMH 2A (Charge Time 20AH=7.5 Hours)x2 $54.36x2= $108.72 :
http://www.all-battery.com/TenergyNiMHBatteryCharger01017.aspx

DC to DC converter to run lights, EL, accessories, Whatever

48v to 12v 10A DC-DC Converter $34.95
http://www.evparts.com/prod-DC2415.htm

Calculation Tool:
http://www.evconvert.com/tools/evcalc/

Options:
Cheapest: Lawn mower battery and BMC controller + Charger, misc wiring parts = $491.78
Add DC-DC = $526.73
111.8 lb Battery pack with better range, but you will feel the drag $774.29
Notes: I doubt these batteries will last long, but they will last through burning man.

Most elaborate: LiFePO4 40AH+ Cycle Analyst + all options= $1,638.42
This option turns the trike into a Commuter vehicle capable of 54 Miles between charges.. would still probably only go 20MPH with the current motor.

Some Compromise: LiFePO4 20AH+ Cycle Analyst + all options= $1270.29
A bit more reasonable with batteries that will last between BM’s and still give you a full day of riding.

A very good option LiPO: 20AH+ Cycle Analyst + all options= $1096.35
Shorter Life Span but still very good and slightly better range. We could get this price down a tad but not much. Maybe $50 but we may lose a bit of power.

The NiMh option is a bit too far off to even price it out. It is a good battery technology but better batteries are cheaper.

Pineapples

I am in this video about Pineapples.

Maybe my second or third youtube video appearance... Hahaha... I am so famous.
An other So far, just an extra but I should be workin' on a lead role... Hi Mums!

I wish netflix had these movies:

When I was in Saigon this year, I went to the Bam No Women's Museum with my friend Thao An.
I was struck by this amazing photo taken by
Dr. Duong Quynh Hoa of Vo Thi Thang. as she was being captured for her involvement in attacks against the South Vietnamese and American troops during the Tet siese fire treaty.

The image “http://www.blazerhead.com/blogs/blog/photos/blog_pics/images/1007/500x347.aspx” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

So there is this movie about how women were treated as equals while the war was happening but their positions has been slipping as Vietnam modernizes. It is not on netflix.

Rising Above:
Women of Vietnam

Some others I would like to see but are not available on netflix:
The Other Final
The Last of the Hiding Tribes: Return from Extinction
